The Chinese have a long tradition of paper cutting and during Chinese New Year, auspicious words of prosperity in paper cut forms are extremely popular. Most of these sold at street bazaars are machine cut and are relatively inexpensive. Fishes are a popular motiff in Chinese paper cuttings as the word fish in Chinese sounds like "abundance" which is a good thing to have during the New Year.
